LAS VEGAS (KSNV News3LV) — Three days after Republican Donald Trump tried to tamp down the "birther" issue he ignited years ago, Nevada Democrats are having none of it.

"Trump refuses to apologize for his birther comments," says State Senator Kelvin Atkinson, D-Clark County.

Friday, Trump addressed the issue at the very end of a media event at his Washington hotel. He said tersely, "President Obama was born in the United States. Period." He also said the matter was initially raised by then candidate Hillary Clinton in 2008, which is false.

"Donald Trump has no regard for the facts," said State Senator Pat Spearman, who joined her senate colleague at the Monday Democratic event.

Democrats are not willing to let the issue rest, sensing it could damage Trump's outreach to African Americans.

News 3 has reached out to the Nevada Trump campaign which did not directly address the birther controversy.
