Las Vegas, NV – Today at the Nevada State Democratic Party’s State Central Committee (SCC) meeting in Las Vegas, Democrats from across the state elected William McCurdy II to serve as the next Chair.

Chair William McCurdy II said: “This is a new chapter for our party and for all Nevadans. I’m grateful to everyone who stepped up to run in these officer elections, and I want every member of this party to know they will have a seat at the table and their voice will be heard. Our mission now is to come together around our common goals as progressives and start organizing and registering voters in our communities in every corner of Nevada. We have so much to accomplish together as a united Democratic Party in 2018 – kicking Dean Heller out of the Senate, sending Ruben Kihuen, Jacky Rosen and Dina Titus back to fight for us in Congress, electing a Democratic governor and reclaiming our statewide constitutional offices, and expanding our majorities in the State Senate and Assembly. I look forward to working with Democrats across Nevada to deliver on these priorities.”

William McCurdy is a Las Vegas native who represents District 6 in the Nevada Assembly. After dropping out of high school as a teenage father, McCurdy became a construction foreman and went back to school to get his high school diploma at 24 years old. He is the former student body president of the College of Southern Nevada and now a union organizer with SEIU Local 1107. McCurdy is the Nevada State Democratic Party’s first African American Chair in history and the youngest Chair in modern party history at 28 years old. The first bill he presented as an Assemblyman was to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour.

Outgoing Chair Roberta Lange said: “While it will be bittersweet for me to leave this role leading our incredible state party after six years, I’m honored that William McCurdy II is taking the reins. As CSN student body president, as an SEIU organizer and already as a new Assemblyman, he has proven himself to be a progressive fighter for students and working families. I can’t wait to see him bring that fiery passion to this role in holding Republicans accountable up and down the ticket. I am as optimistic as ever about the future of our state and our Democratic Party as we begin gearing up for the 2018 election cycle.”

In addition to electing a new Chair, Nevada Democrats elected Marty McGarry as First Vice Chair and Jose Solorio as Second Vice Chair. The SCC also re-elected Marla Turner as Secretary and Jan Churchill as Treasurer.
