As Early Vote Begins, Nevadans Prepare to Deliver a Referendum on Trump’s Failed Presidency Ahead of His Visit to Our State

As Trump heads to Carson City, he must answer for his disastrous mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to nearly 200,000 workers without jobs, over 88,000 coronavirus cases, and more than 1,700 lives lost in Nevada.

Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Madison Mundy released the following statement:

“While Trump spends his time holding another reckless rally and spouting more empty rhetoric to distract from his ineffective pandemic response, Nevadans will be laser-focused on voting early and holding Trump accountable for his failure to lead. The only good that will come of Trump’s visit is that it will remind Nevadans of his many broken promises right as voters begin to exercise yet another option we have to cast a ballot and reject Trump’s failed record by voting early in-person.”

HOW TRUMP’S FAILED PANDEMIC RESPONSE HAS HURT NEVADA FAMILIES

Trump has known since early February that the airborne coronavirus spreads easily through crowds and was far more dangerous than the flu.

  • Despite this, Trump misled the American public on the threat of the pandemic and proceeded to downplay the seriousness of COVID-19 for months.
  • Trump continued to hold indoor campaign rallies across the country — including two in Nevada in late February and in September.
  • In an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal following his indoor rally in Henderson in September, Trump made clear he wasn’t concerned with his supporters potentially contracting COVID-19 by attending his events.

In March, Trump promised that the White House would marshal “the full power of the federal government and the private sector to protect the American people.” But nothing could be further from the truth. [Oval Office Address, 3/11/20]

Now, even in the midst of a global pandemic, Trump is still waging an endless campaign to overturn the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and rip away health care coverage from hundreds of thousands of Nevadans.

  • In 2016, Trump pledged: “We’re going to have health care that is so good and so much less expensive.” [Trump Campaign Rally, Las Vegas NV, 10/30/16]
  • But Trump broke his promise and now, Nevada families are paying the price. If Trump’s legal assault on the ACA is successful, 309,000 Nevadans could lose their coverage in the middle of a pandemic — right when they need it the most.
  • If it hadn’t been for Nevada Democrats’ work to make these protections for people with pre-existing conditions permanent last year, as many as 1.15 million Nevadans could have faced denial of coverage by insurers.

From the start of the coronavirus crisis, Trump’s mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on Nevadans’ health and economic security.

  • There have been more than 88,00 reported cases of COVID-19 in Nevada, and more than 1,700 Nevadans have tragically lost their lives due to the virus. Earlier this week, Clark County was placed back on elevated risk, and Nevada’s positivity rate has been rising slowly since mid-September.
  • People of color are suffering from coronavirus at disproportionate rates. Latinos account for the largest share of COVID-19 cases in Clark and Washoe County.
The pandemic has left nearly 200,000 Nevadans unemployed and devastated our economy, which for multiple months had the nation’s highest unemployment rate.
  • Trump let PPP funds meant for small businesses go to large corporations and companies owned by his donors and allies, while leaving Nevada’s small businesses out in the cold.
