As Washoe and Clark County students start classes today, here’s a reminder that Joe Lombardo has vetoed critical bills that would have helped Nevada students succeed. A recent report revealed that Northern Nevada parents have accrued more than $100,000 of debt due to Lombardo’s veto of guaranteed school meals–all while food insecurity remains on the rise with an estimated one in five children uncertain where their next meal is coming from. Another one of the bills Lombardo vetoed, SB340, would have provided guaranteed access to summer school for all public school students who needed the extra help.
A report found that following Lombardo’s vetoes of critical bills that would have helped Nevada students succeed, Nevada ranks in the bottom four states for children’s well-being, with all education measurements worsening over his term.
Earlier this year, Lombardo came out in full support of Donald Trump’s executive order to eliminate the Department of Education (DOE) in order to pay for the largest permanent tax cuts for billionaires in history. The Lombardo-Trump plan to eliminate the DOE threatens nearly $1 billion per year in funding for Nevada schools and students on top of the Trump administration already stripping $29 million in grant funding from Nevada schools.
Nevada State Democratic Party Executive Director Hilary Barrett:
“The self-proclaimed ‘education governor’ has done everything but prioritize our students’ success. On top of vetoing universal access to summer school and guaranteed school meals for public school students, he is in lockstep with Donald Trump’s destruction of public education, all to pave the way for tax handouts for billionaires.”
