Chair McCurdy, Nevada Dreamer Reflect on Three Years Since Trump First Attempted to End DACA

Three years ago, Donald Trump first announced his intent to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. This decision, which the Supreme Court deemed unconstitutional this summer, is one example in a long list of attacks from the Trump administration on immigrant communities. Trump’s attempt to end DACA protections threw the lives of more than 13,000 Nevada Dreamers into turmoil.

Nevada State Democratic Party Chair William McCurdy II and Sebastian Cardenas, a college student and Nevada Dreamer, released the following statements condemning Trump’s attacks on Dreamers and all immigrants.

“From day one, Donald Trump has relentlessly attacked immigrant communities in Nevada and across the country. Trump has ripped Latino families apart with his heartless immigration policies, while weaponizing racism and xenophobia for political gain. Meanwhile, his failed coronavirus response has devastated Latino communities across the state, who are being disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. Home means Nevada to more than 13,000 Dreamers, and they deserve leaders who treat immigrant communities with the respect and dignity they deserve. When we elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, we’ll once again have leadership in the White House that embraces Nevada’s diversity as its greatest strength.”

Sebastian Cardenas added:

“Eight years ago the Obama-Biden administration gave almost 700,000 Dreamers in the United States including myself, hope and protection. They did this knowing how much we are willing to do for America, our home. Three years ago, Donald Trump threatened the stability and protection DACA offers. I wake up knowing I could lose everything, every day. I experience Trump’s demonization of Latinos, and its consequences. Trump will continue to divide us to maintain power. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will unite us and give power back to the people. As president, Biden will build on the legacy he began with former President Barack Obama by fighting for comprehensive immigration reform and a clear path to citizenship for people like me.”
