January 6 Anniversary Reminds Us of Deep Divides; Need for Fierce Protection of Democratic Institutions

LAS VEGAS — Nevada State Democratic Party Chair Judith Whitmer released the following statement on the first anniversary of the January 6 riots and attempted coup in Washington, D.C.:

“The promise of democracy is the beating heart of the American political experiment. We have not always gotten it right, but waves of progress have made participatory democracy available to more and more people, slowly moving us toward a ‘more perfect Union.’ But in the past several years, we’ve seen democracy itself come under very real threat, and one year ago, that came to a dangerous head,” said Chair Whitmer.

“Encouraged by what has become a mainstream current within the Republican Party and President Trump himself, calls to overturn the free and fair 2020 election came in the form of votes by far too many members of Congress, and were followed up with a lethal riot, where lawmakers colluded with a fascist mob in a terrifying show of unity.

“Watching the physical institutions of democracy be overrun was an inescapable reminder of what happens when we let our civic institutions—the right to vote, the peaceful transfer of power, the protection of democratic decisions—become overrun. We can’t turn back the clock, but we can fight right now to make sure that democracy itself is protected.

“We must ensure that every eligible person has access to vote safely and easily, and it is incumbent upon us, as party leaders, to further ensure that citizens feel empowered to participate in democracy, to have their voices heard, and to not be trampled upon by the powerful. The physical and moral foundations of democracy are still under attack to this day. Democrats must work together to keep them strong.”
