In 2016, a majority of Nevadans voted in favor of a ballot initiative to implement background checks on private gun sales, but then-Attorney General Adam Laxalt refused to do his job and enforce this requirement. After years of Republican inaction on common sense gun safety measures, today Democrats successfully passed legislation enacting background checks and Governor Sisolak signed the bill into law.
Nevada State Democratic Party Chair William McCurdy II released the following statement:
“I am proud of our leaders in Carson City today for enacting the will of voters by finally passing legislation requiring background checks on private gun sales--closing the loophole once and for all. Former Attorney General Adam Laxalt failed to do his job and neglected his responsibility to make our communities safer when he refused to enforce this common sense measure. It is the duty of our elected officials to honor the will of Nevadans and I am beyond grateful for the legislators and gun safety advocates whose tireless dedication got us to this moment.
“I also want to thank Governor Sisolak for his leadership on this issue and applaud him for both testifying to the need for this legislation and for signing this critical bill into law. Our state is safer because of it.”
