This weekend, Trump recklessly endangered Nevadans by defying emergency state directives and holding in-person rallies, a move that contradicted his own White House Coronavirus Task Force’s recommendations.
Trump’s determination to flout public health experts and hold large, in-person rallies in Nevada, all while a pandemic rages, garnered national attention:
New York Times: Trump Defies Nevada Directive as Thousands Gather for Indoor Rally. “Thousands of Trump supporters, the vast majority of them forgoing face masks, packed inside a manufacturing plant on Sunday night in a Las Vegas suburb, where President Trump brashly ignored a state directive limiting indoor gatherings to under 50 people… As of Sunday evening, there had been at least 73,648 cases and 1,454 deaths in Nevada since the beginning of the pandemic, according to a New York Times database. At least 12 new coronavirus deaths and 405 new cases were reported in the state on Sept. 12.”
The Washington Post: Trump is still bent on endangering Americans. “President Trump cannot help himself. As he is battling to play down his own admission that he played down the covid-19 threat to avoid “panic,” he seems determined to demonstrate how little he cares for the safety and lives of fellow Americans.”
CNN: How Donald Trump’s indoor campaign rally reveals how little he understands about being president. “Trump is, as he notes in the Review Journal interview, “on a stage and it’s very far away.” He’s also tested regularly and travels in a bubble that should lower his chances of getting the coronavirus. The real danger was for the attendees of this event, many of whom, according to photographs and videos from the event, were not wearing masks or practicing social distancing. Those people spent several hours in close proximity to thousands of other people — all of it indoors. It’s literally doing the opposite of everything we know helps mitigate the spread of the virus.”
Business Insider: Trump held an indoor rally in Nevada against medical advice. Only supporters whose faces would be on TV were required to wear masks. “The president has sought to downplay the impact of the crisis, and in his speech Sunday he railed against Nevada’s Democratic governor, Steve Sisolak, calling on him to lift restrictions designed to slow the spread of the disease. Nevada has reported about 1,500 deaths from COVID-19.”
As Trump spread lies while risking the spread of coronavirus in Nevada this weekend, Nevada Democrats were on the airwaves and in print, hitting back and setting the record straight:
During a NV Dems press call, Nevada State Democratic Party Chair William McCurdy II, DNC Chair Tom Perez, U.S. Representative Dina Titus, State Senator Yvanna Cancela, and Walker River Paiute Tribe Chairman Amber Torres discussed how Trump’s failed leadership has hurt Nevada communities
USA Today: “After intentionally misleading the American people for months on end about the threat of the coronavirus, Trump continued to endanger Americans’ health by holding multiple in-person campaign rallies across the country, ignoring the White House’s own public health recommendations.” – Nevada State Democratic Party Chair William McCurdy
KSNV: “Trump is endangering Nevadans and flying in the face of his own White House recommendations by holding rallies this weekend. These emergency directives were put in place because under Trump’s watch, the outbreak of coronavirus got out of control. Over 190,000 Americans are dead, including nearly 1,500 Nevadans. But still, Trump continues to care more about boosting his own ego through super spreader rallies than about the health and safety of Nevadans.”- Nevada State Democratic Party Chair William McCurdy
KSNV: “Today, a virtual press call between DNC Chair Tom Perez and Nevada Democrats called out President Trump on his pandemic response, saying it was a ‘colossal failure.’ They believe his stops in the Silver State are further adding to the spread of COVID-19.”
KLAS: “He knew how deadly this virus was and he tried to hide it. He knew it, but he didn’t care. He played it down, and the death toll went up and up and up.” – DNC Chair Tom Perez
KTNV: “I was off put by [Trump’s] attacks on our Governor. Our Governor is trying to manage this crisis unlike Trump, who has downplayed this crisis from the beginning. – NV Dems Executive Board member and Reno’s Human Rights Commission Member Alex Goff
CBS News: “Trump willfully endangered Nevadans, all so he could spew lies to fan his own ego. Trump is criminally selfish. This November, Nevadans will reject Trump again and elect real leaders to the White House.” – Nevada State Democratic Party Spokesperson Madison Mundy
Washington Post: “Trump is endangering Nevadans and flying in the face of his own White House recommendations by holding rallies this weekend. These emergency directives were put in place because under Trump’s watch, the outbreak of coronavirus got out of control. Over 190,000 Americans are dead, including nearly 1,500 Nevadans. But still, Trump continues to care more about boosting his own ego through superspreader rallies than about the health and safety of Nevadans.” – Nevada State Democratic Party Chair William McCurdy
On Sunday, as Trump tried to compensate for four years of failing Latino families with a Latino roundtable, a grassroots group of Latino supporters for Biden organized a car parade in protest of the President’s presence in Las Vegas:
Las Vegas Review-Journal: “Latino supporters of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden gathered for a car parade Sunday afternoon on Las Vegas Boulevard.”
KLAS: “Latino supporters of Joe Biden participated in a car parade through the Las Vegas Strip on Sunday to show support for the presidential candidate within the Latino community. The group held a press conference at Freedom Park. Then, the car parade drove from the park through Las Vegas Boulevard and ended at Trump International Hotel. The event was organized by a grassroots group of Latino supporters of Joe Biden in Nevada.”
Assemblyman and Chair of the Hispanic Legislative Caucus Edgar Flores speaks to Trump’s failed record for Latino families during Sunday’s parade.
But just because Trump is out of our state, doesn’t mean the fight is over. Nevada Democrats will continue to combat Trump’s lies and failed policies until Nevadans kick Trump out of office for good this November.
