NV Dems Set the Record Straight After Trump Spews Falsehood In RNC Acceptance Speech

Last night, President Trump offered his acceptance speech as the Republican Party formally nominated him for a second term. Addressing a crowd of 1,000, mostly maskless, attendees on the White House lawn, Trump offered a blustering speech filled with distortions and flat out falsehoods about what he has accomplished while in office. In his speech, Trump described an alternate America, ignoring the devastation wrought by coronavirus, which has made America the country with the highest number of deaths in the world, as well as its economic impacts that affect Nevada at a disproportionate rate. But Trump not only failed Americans during the pandemic; for the last four years, Trump has championed corporations and the ultra-wealthy at the expense of working people.

FACT CHECK

TRUMP: “The United States has among the lowest case fatality rates of any major country anywhere in the world.”

REALITY: Not true.”

In fact, Since the convention opened, more than 3,600 Americans have perished from Covid-19 — far more than died on 9/11 or in Afghanistan.

Trump’s self-congratulatory tone is contemptible. His indecisiveness cost American lives. Researchers estimate that if the U.S. had shut down just one week earlier, 36,000 lives could have been spared.

TRUMP: “We will always, and very strongly, protect patients with pre-existing conditions, and that is a pledge from the entire Republican Party.”

REALITY: Trump made health care less affordable and less accessible.

Trump is trying to take away health care for millions of Americans — including 300,000 Nevadans with his repeated efforts to eliminate the Affordable Care Act.

He has expanded the availability of junk insurance plans that do not offer coverage to people with pre-existing conditions.

TRUMP: “Instead of following the science, Joe Biden wants to inflict a painful shutdown on the entire country.”

REALITY: Trump has led an anti-science campaign from the White House.

Joe Biden will listen to scientists, something Trump has failed to do throughout this crisis and throughout his entire presidency. From expressing skepticism about vaccines to denying climate change, Trump has led an anti-science campaign from the White House.

The fact remains, until we get virus outbreaks under control, our economy will not recover. Biden has a plan to control coronavirus and build back our economy.

TRUMP: The wall will soon be complete, and it is working beyond our wildest expectations.”

REALITY: Trump’s border wall is a farce and his larger immigration policies have created a humanitarian crisis at our border.

Trump Administration’s cruel and senseless policies separate parents from their children at our border.

Trump has used the coronavirus as an excuse to “end asylum as we know it,” expelling vulnerable families and unaccompanied children.

TRUMP: “I say very modestly that I have done more for the African-American community than any president since Abraham Lincoln, our first Republican president.”

REALITY: Trump stood in the way of criminal justice reform. His tax breaks hurt Black communities. His failed coronavirus response has devastated people of color.

Trump’s Justice Department actively undermined the criminal justice reforms Trump publicly touted.

Trump’s administration rolled back efforts to reduce sentencing disparities and effectively eliminated the use of one of the most powerful tools to combat police abuses.

Instead of helping the Black community, Trump’s ‘opportunity zones’ have been just another windfall for rich investors like Trump’s friends and family.

Latino and African-American residents of the United States have been three times as likely to become infected as their white neighbors and also bear the highest fatality rates.

TRUMP: “Over the past three months, we have gained over 9 million jobs, and that’s a record in the history of our country.”

REALITY: Trump has delivered a disastrous economy to working people.

The coronavirus recession completely distorts the data. Nine million jobs is nothing in the context of jobs lost between March and April; a whopping 22.2 million. The sheer size of the jobs crash was so unprecedented, it erased nearly a decade of job market growth.

Trump has been terrible on the economy by prolonging the severity of the coronavirus through a total void in leadership.

But even before the crisis, the economy was not working for working people: Trump’s tax law failed to raise workers wages or bonuses as he promised. Instead, it helped the wealthiest Americans and biggest corporations. The gap between the richest Americans and everyone else grew during Trump’s presidency.
