LAS VEGAS, NV — Nevada State Democratic Party Chair Judith Whitmer released the following statement on Friday, May 28, 2021 in response to Rory Appleton of the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s story Activists with ties to Proud Boys may seek leadership of Clark County GOP and David Siders of Politico’s article ‘It’s insane’: Proud Boys furor tests limits of Trump’s GOP:
“It is terrifying, but unsurprising that–following the deadly insurrection on January 6th–the domestic terrorist organization known as the ‘Proud Boys’ and their neo-fascist affiliates are actively and effectively working to garner political power within the Clark County GOP and the Republican Party in Nevada.
This is not to be taken lightly.
At some point, the GOP made the conscious decision to brazenly move in the direction of division and hatred since even before Donald Trump announced his candidacy for the U.S. Presidency, continuing to do so at an accelerated pace ever since he took office.
The modern Republican party has doubled down on the vile, racist ideals put on display during the anti-Semitic Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, the former President’s Islamophobic travel ban, the prevoius administration’s violation of human rights at the border and far too much more.
This trajectory has been encouraged by both the silence of its legacy members and the active elevation of this hate-filled, domestic terrorist organization. We now have confirmation of this trajectory playing out right here in Nevada, where long-time party players did nothing to stop the rise of hate groups until they were personally affected.
The Nevada State Democratic Party stands united in denouncing the Proud Boys and wishes for everyone’s sake that the Republican Party had done the same long ago.
We will always stand on the side of life and humanity”.
