Duncan Joins Laxalt in Zealous Anti-Choice Crusade

by Nevada Democrats

Over the weekend, Republican attorney general candidate and Laxalt lackey Wes Duncan joined gubernatorial hopeful Adam Laxalt in a tireless crusade against women’s right to make their own health care decisions. On Thursday, the NV Dems called out Laxalt for visiting an anti-choice clinic in Las Vegas called First Choice Pregnancy Services that engages in questionable tactics designed to discourage women from exercising their right to a safe and legal abortion.

Some of the “work” that Duncan thinks First Choice should be commended for includes:

  • Intentionally locating themselves next to a busy abortion provider and planning to expand to target every abortion provider in Las Vegas so as to “intercept” every woman who seeks a legal abortion in the city.

  • Peddling false promises of miscarriage by telling women they have a “1 in 4” chance of miscarrying and advertising “technology” to show women if they have “a high probability of miscarrying.” In fact, the actual rate of miscarriage in known pregnancies is closer to one in 10, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

  • Attempting to perform an ultrasound “right then” on women who come in and “are abortion-minded.”

  • Blaming the emergence of the birth control pill for an increase in the types of sexually transmitted diseases as a way to discourage the use of contraceptives.

  • Spending 600 percent more on a fundraising banquet and 23 percent more on advertising than on providing ultrasounds and pregnancy tests.

Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Helen Kalla released the following statement:

“Wes Duncan is making it clear he’d use the attorney general’s office to further his ultra-conservative, partisan agenda, just like his mentor Adam Laxalt. Nevada women can’t trust a candidate who rushes to defend a fake health center that pushes an ideological agenda on women who are seeking unbiased information to help them make their own personal health care decisions.”
