Laxalt’s Visit to Anti-Abortion Clinic Clarifies His Views on Reproductive Rights

by Nevada Democrats

Yesterday, Republican gubernatorial candidate Adam Laxalt visited First Choice Pregnancy Services, a facility with a long track record of trying to prevent women from exercising their right to choose, including intentionally locating themselves next to a busy abortion provider and discouraging women from obtaining safe and legal abortions by telling them they might have a good chance of miscarrying.

Laxalt’s tour comes after he snubbed a line of questioning from The Nevada Independent on his views on reproductive choice, ignoring attempts to clarify his positions.

What is your stance on abortion? Should it be outlawed at all stages or just some? Should there be more restrictions on it, such as a waiting period, parental notification for minors, or an ultrasound requirement? I’m pro-life.

Laxalt’s decision to visit First Choice says a lot about his real views on reproductive rights that he tried to hide. According to a First Choice employee, the staff attempts to perform an ultrasound on women “right then” and aims to expand to target every abortion provider in Las Vegas. The facility’s website tells women they “may not need an abortion” and advertises “technology” to tell women if they have “a high probability of miscarrying.” The establishment also discourages the use of contraceptives, attempting to blame the emergence of the birth control pill for an increase in the types of sexually transmitted diseases.

But helping women may not be First Choice’s top priority. According to their most recent tax return, the facility spent over 600 percent more on their fundraising banquet and 23 percent more on advertising than on providing ultrasounds and pregnancy tests.

Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Helen Kalla released the following statement:

“We now know why Laxalt tried to hide his views on reproductive rights, because he supports using intimidating and questionable tactics to dissuade women from exercising their right to choose. Laxalt’s extreme, far-right stance on this issue is out of step with Nevada women and threatens to roll back decades of progress on women’s freedom to make their own health care decisions.”
