REMINDER: Laxalt Pushed to Block Abortion Access in Landmark SCOTUS Case

by Nevada Democrats

Today is the two-year anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, the landmark case that strengthened and reaffirmed women’s constitutional right to abortion. In keeping with his pattern of joining lawsuits in support of restrictive Texas abortion laws, Nevada’s Republican attorney general Adam Laxalt signed an amicus brief in support of the Texas law that was struck down for placing an unconstitutional burden on women’s reproductive freedoms.

In the first abortion rights case heard by the Supreme Court in over 20 years, the Court struck down a Texas TRAP law, or Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers, that imposed medically unnecessary restrictions on abortion clinics for the sole purpose of curbing the availability of abortion providers. The 2013 state law forced more than half of Texas’ abortion providers to shutter, and if it were upheld, Texas women would be left with as few as nine abortion providers in the 800 mile-long state.

Of course, this was not the only anti-choice legal action gubernatorial candidate Adam Laxalt has taken as Nevada’s attorney general. Laxalt joined an amicus brief defending another Texas law ruled unconstitutional that would ban the most common second trimester abortion method. He also joined an amicus brief for a U.S. Supreme Court case decided yesterday in support of allowing so-called “crisis pregnancy centers” to deceive and intimidate women in order to dissuade them from exercising their right to choose.

Earlier this month, Laxalt stuck his foot in his mouth when he let it slip to Reno’s KOLO that he would “look into” rolling back Nevada’s 1990 law that protects women’s access to abortion. The law was passed by referendum with over 60 percent of the vote and can only be amended by another vote of the people. Laxalt’s campaign went into embarrassing damage control to try to walk back his comments, but raw interview footage leaves no doubt about what Laxalt said.

Nevada State Democratic Party spokeswoman Helen Kalla released the following statement:

“Adam Laxalt wants to turn Nevada into Texas, one of the most punishing states in the country for women’s reproductive rights. Laxalt’s single-minded obsession with rolling back abortion access threatens the freedom of women across Nevada, especially rural women. Knowing that Laxalt is against stronger protections for the right to choose is all the evidence Nevada women need to determine that he is out of step with their values and would drag our state backwards.”
