Will Heller, Laxalt Join Sandoval in Disavowing Nevada GOP’s Recall Effort?

by Nevada Democrats

As the spotlight continues to shine on Republicans abusing the recall process to try to overturn the results of the 2016 election and take back control of Nevada’s State Senate, voters deserve to know where Senator Dean Heller and Attorney General Adam Laxalt stand on their party’s controversial recall effort.

  • Last week, Republican Governor Brian Sandoval firmly denounced the recall effort, saying there was no legitimate reason behind it and that it will set a “dangerous precedent.”
  • Meanwhile, Adam Laxalt’s unofficial running mate in his race for Governor is Senate Minority Leader Michael Roberson - the same failed politician who lost the GOP’s majority in 2016 and is now pushing the recall strategy.
  • And the private law firm of Heller’s Campaign Chair, outgoing Republican Lieutenant Governor Mark Hutchison, is now serving as legal counsel to the shady groups behind the recall efforts.

“Dean Heller and Adam Laxalt should be embarrassed to be associated with the sore losers behind this campaign to steal seats in the State Senate,” said Nevada State Democratic Party Chair William McCurdy II. “The fact that Senator Heller’s campaign chair is making money off of this underhanded effort to hijack our democracy is disgusting, and the fact that Adam Laxalt would endorse Michael Roberson as his running mate raises real questions about his already questionable judgment. If they have any moral compass, Heller and Laxalt will speak out against this scheme to thwart the will of Nevada voters.”

Nevada Republicans are pushing a desperate political tactic after losing their legislative majorities in 2016: recalls. Democrats successfully flipped control of both chambers in the Nevada legislature last year – the only state to do so in the nation. Republicans can’t win back their majorities through normal elections in November 2018, so they have filed three baseless recall petitions against members of the Senate Democratic caucus. The GOP’s abuse of the recall process has been labeled “an affront to Nevada voters” and a “subversion of democracy.”
