After He Attended the Unveiling of Trump’s Reckless New Tariff in D.C., Lombardo Still Wants Nevadans to “Feel a Little Pain”

Trump has been illegally taxing Nevadans’ groceries for a year but Lombardo continues to put Trump ahead of working families

Nevada small businesses and working families celebrated after the Supreme Court struck down Donald Trump’s unconstitutional tariffs that Joe Lombardo has endorsed. But instead of following the Supreme Court’s ruling and siding with the overwhelming majority of Americans, Trump, with Lombardo by his side, unveiled a new global tariff.

While Lombardo remains Trump’s cheerleader-in-chief, his erratic trade war cost Nevada households more than $1,700 on average as working families dip into emergency savings just to make ends meet.

Here’s the latest coverage on the Lombardo-Trump tariffs:

KLAS: Supreme Court strikes down key Trump-Era tariffs; small businesses face uncertainty

  • A major ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court is reshaping national trade policy, and small businesses here in Las Vegas said they’re watching closely.

  • But while the decision could bring eventual relief, some small business owners said uncertainty is still the biggest challenge.

  • Villa, along with other florists, was forced to absorb costs or pass 10% to 25% price increases onto customers, but may now see a stabilization in prices. He said flowers are a time-sensitive business.

  • Many of the flowers sold in the U.S. are grown in countries like Colombia and Ecuador before being shipped here.

  • “I don’t want to get political, but the uncertainty that we’re living we don’t even know how to survive or live. We’re afraid to buy, afraid to spend, don’t be afraid to spend,” said Villa.

  • Economists said while the Supreme Court’s ruling may ease some tariff-related costs over time, it could take months before businesses and consumers see any noticeable price changes.

New York Times: Trump Presses on With Tariffs Despite Court, and Court of Public Opinion

  • President Trump’s defiant response to the Supreme Court decision striking a blow against his signature economic tool pushed the Republican Party further down an uncomfortable path of defending tariffs that are unpopular with the public.

  • On Saturday, Mr. Trump said he was raising his new global tariff to 15 percent.

  • Yet the painful political reality for Republicans, even those allied with the president, is that his tariff regime has proved deeply unpopular. Some privately lamented that Mr. Trump had missed a chance to walk them back ahead of a midterm election expected to turn heavily on the economy, instead recommitting to a policy that divides his party.

  • A majority of Americans and 58 percent of independent voters opposed Mr. Trump’s tariffs, according to a New York Times/Siena University poll released last month.

  • In Nevada, Aaron Ford, the Democratic attorney general, said that he planned to make tariffs a big part of his campaign for governor against Gov. Joe Lombardo, the Republican incumbent, who last year mused that Nevadans “maybe need to feel a little pain in the short term” to get long-term benefit from tariffs.

News 4: Nevada treasurer sends $2.1 billion payment request to President Trump after tariff ruling

  • Here in northern Nevada, shoppers leaving the Reno Costco were glad to hear their grocery bill could be coming down soon.

  • Prior to Friday’s ruling, the federal government collected more than $130 billion in tariff revenue. So, what happens to that money now?

  • Nevada Treasurer Zach Conine wants those dollars back in your pocket. He sent the Trump administration a $2.1 billion bill, accounting for the roughly 1.2 million Silver State households.
  • Data from the minority membership of the U.S. Joint Economic Committee shows the Trump administration’s tariff actions have cost American consumers $231 billion, roughly coming out to $1,744 per household.
