Las Vegas Sun: “Trump hits Nevadans hard in first 100 days”
Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office have already devastated Nevada’s economy. The tariffs that Joe Lombardo and Nevada Republicans support are hurting Nevada’s small businesses and beginning to hit Nevadans directly in their wallets.. An independent study estimates that the cumulative impact of Trump’s tariffs will result in an average effective pay cut of $3,800 for U.S. households as the tariffs force costs to go up. Amid Trump’s trade war with Canada, the Nevada Independent found that the number of Canadians traveling to Las Vegas saw some of the largest declines when compared with February 2024. And the decline in international visitors isn’t just limited to Canadians. Gaming revenue has already taken a hit, down almost 14% compared to last year.
NBC News recently reported that Donald Trump and federal Republicans are planning to slash federal funding for Medicaid expansion. Trump’s budget is designed to pay for tax cuts for billionaires and large corporations by cutting Medicaid funding, despite the fact that these cuts could cost the state nearly $1.9 billion over the next two years and double the state’s uninsured rate and with it health care for more than 300,000 Nevadans. The Assistant GOP Leader of the Nevada Senate said cuts to Medicaid, Social Security and Medicare are “fair game” as part of Republican efforts to pass Trump’s tax cuts for billionaires and giant corporations.
Trump signed an executive order to eliminate the Department of Education, which Joe Lombardo fully supports. The Lombardo-Trump plan to eliminate the U.S. Department of Education would threaten nearly $1 billion per year in funding for Nevada schools and students. If Lombardo and Trump get their way, funding for Pell Grants, community colleges, special education, career and technical education, and other essential services for Nevada students will be on the chopping block. Over the last five years, Nevada students and schools have been supported by the U.S. Department of Education with a total of nearly $6 billion in critical funding. In recent weeks, the Trump administration stripped $29 million in grant funding for Nevada schools to help pave the way for more tax cuts for billionaires.
