3 Days, 3 Ways: Sam Brown’s Strong Support for Yucca Mountain Puts Him at Odds With Nevada’s Environmental and Scientific Leaders

Last week, Nevadans found out that MAGA extremist Sam Brown thinks that restarting Yucca Mountain and turning Nevada into the nation’s nuclear waste dumping ground is an “incredible opportunity.” It’s an extreme, out-of-touch position that “could roil Nevada U.S. Senate race,” as outlets and critics across the state call Brown’s stance “not very aware,” “reckless,” and “politically damaging.”

Over the next three days, the Nevada State Democratic Party will be highlighting all the ways Sam Brown is putting himself at odds with Nevada’s environmental, business and political leaders by strongly supporting the plan to restart Yucca Mountain.

Brown’s extreme support for reviving Yucca Mountain puts him directly at odds with environmental and scientific leaders from across Nevada, including:

  • The Sierra Club and National Resource Defence Council oppose restarting Yucca Mountain, citing health and environmental concerns such as:
    • Transportation challenges and carrying nuclear waste to Yucca;
    • Radiation poisoning that could harm and the environment in the event of a terrorist attack or transportation accident;
    • Any weather or natural disaster, including earthquakes, that could impact the storage of nuclear waste and the surrounding communities.
  • Nevada Conservation League Executive Director Kristee Watson emphasized that Yucca Mountain also sits on several fault lines and that the facility could be damaged in the event of an earthquake.
    • “Nevadans have been standing as a united front against Yucca Mountain for decades because we know how dangerous this proposal would be for the health, safety, and economic security of people across the entire state.”
  • During a Press Conference last week, Climate Power State Advisory Board Member Cinthia Moore said:
    • “Yucca Mountain poses a direct threat to our national security, to our environment, and the health of our workers. But as a mother, I’m concerned about Nevada’s future if Yucca ever becomes a reality… I want to say this loud and clear so Sam Brown can understand. We do not want Yucca Mountain in Nevada.”
