5 Days of Lombardo’s Vetoes: Housing

In June 2023, Joe Lombardo prioritized special interests over the interests of Nevadans by vetoing legislation that would have expanded access to reproductive health care, lowered costs for families, and kept our communities safe. Leading up to the primary, NV Dems are highlighting Lombardo’s harmful vetoes and how he and his hand-picked candidates are out of touch with Nevadans.

Last legislative session, Lombardo vetoed several bills that would have lowered housing costs for Nevada residents. Then he doubled down on his vetoes of Democrat-led legislation that would have lowered housing costs and blamed Nevadans losing their homes on them just not working hard enough. According to him, helping keep Nevadans in their homes is just a “crutch for lack of performance of the renter.”

Lombardo has consistently prioritized that agenda of the slumlord billionaire who bankrolled his gubernatorial campaign over Nevadans and sold out Silver State renters to corporate landlords. On top of that, a report revealed Lombardo’s recently hired chief of staff previously lobbied for corporate landlords who stood to benefit directly from Lombardo’s anti-tenant vetoes.

It’s clear hard working Nevadans can’t trust Lombardo to be on their side to tackle the housing crisis. Social service groups said that the bills Lombardo vetoed would have prevented an eviction and homeless crisis:

  • AB298, would have capped rent prices for seniors and Nevadans with disabilities
  • SB335 would have extended a 2021 law giving Nevadans a chance to catch up on their rent before being evicted if they had a pending rental assistance application.
  • AB340 would have reformed the summary eviction process by requiring landlords, rather than tenants, to be the first to file a case with the courts.
  • SB 78 which would have curtailed landlords’ ability to charge renters costly junk fees.

“A year after vetoing numerous pieces of legislation that would have lowered housing costs and kept more Nevadans in their homes, giving hardworking families relief, Joe Lombardo has yet to come up with a serious plan to curb his housing crisis,” said Nevada State Democratic spokesperson Tai Sims. “To add insult to injury, Lombardo appointed a corporate housing lobbyist as his chief of staff in the midst of a statewide housing crisis which is a slap in the face to the thousands of Nevadans who have faced devastating evictions and rent hikes under his administration.”
