Joe Lombardo has again put Donald Trump’s agenda of pushing cutting taxes for billionaires above Nevadans by coming out in full support of Trump’s executive order that will dismantle the Department of Education. This will have a devastating impact on hundreds of thousands of Nevada students, especially the most at-risk students. Nevadans know Lombardo won’t stand up for Title I and special education funding, which is now on the chopping block as the Trump Administration continues to prioritize more tax handouts to the ultra-wealthy.
The Lombardo-Trump plan to eliminate the U.S. The Department of Education would threaten nearly $1 billion per year in funding for Nevada schools and students. If Lombardo and Trump get their way, funding for Pell Grants, community colleges, special education, career and technical education, and other essential services for Nevada students will be on the chopping block.
Over the last five years, Nevada students and schools have been supported by the U.S. Department of Education with a total of nearly $6 billion in critical funding. That includes support for homeless children, rural and special education programs, and aid to help low-income students seek higher education. From 2023 to today, Department of education funding for key programs includes:
- $315 million in special education programs
- $3.5 million to the education of homeless children.
- $1.4 million for rural education programs
- $621 million in federal Pell Grant funding to aid low-income students attain higher education
- $38 million for career and technical education programs
