In a new interview with The Nevada Independent, Governor Joe Lombardo announced his support for a strict, statewide abortion ban in Nevada. Lombardo, who is anti-choice, said he would back a referendum to repeal Nevada’s current law protecting abortion rights, cutting health care access for women across the state with no stated exceptions for rape, incest or the life of the mother.
Despite Nevada voters having overwhelmingly voted for the current law enshrining abortion rights up to 24 weeks of pregnancy, Lombardo now wants Nevada to join far-right Republicans across the country who are restricting or outright banning abortion rights in the aftermath of Roe v. Wade being overturned.
“Governor Lombardo’s support for a new abortion ban in Nevada demonstrates once again that he is a threat to abortion rights in Nevada,” said Nevada Democratic Party spokesperson Stephanie Justice. “The people of Nevada believe a woman has the right to choose, yet Governor Lombardo continues to lead the fight to restrict our freedoms.”
