“[R]enters and lower-income voters are worried about being locked out of home ownership forever.” – Las Vegas Review-Journal
After a recent survey found that more than 80% of Nevadans believe housing in Nevada is unaffordable under Joe Lombardo, he vetoed AB280, a bill that would prevent rent from skyrocketing for seniors and Nevadans with disabilities. This comes after his veto of a similar bill, AB298 last legislative session.
Lombardo vetoed AB280 while Clark County suffers from one of the highest eviction rates in the country. In the past year alone there have been over 47,000 evictions in Clark County, up from 30,000 evictions in 2023 when there were an average of 70 eviction cases going through eviction court daily in the county. Under Lombardo, homelessness has hit its highest peak since the Great Recession.
Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Tai Sims:
“Joe Lombardo once again put wealthy special interests over working Nevadans by vetoing legislation that would have prevented skyrocketing rent for seniors and those with disabilities. Despite being home to the highest unemployment rate of any state in the nation and its ongoing housing crisis leading to record eviction rates and homelessness, when Lombardo had the opportunity to sign legislation that would help prevent rent costs from rising and keep more Nevadans in their homes, he vetoed it. Make no mistake, Lombardo owns Nevada’s housing crisis.”
