Last legislative session, Republicans voted against several bills that would have lowered housing costs and kept hard-working Nevadans in their homes. At the time, Republicans – whose senate caucus is overwhelmingly made up of landlords and real estate agents – said the legislation “created onerous burdens on landlords.” As a result, Las Vegas now has one of the highest eviction rates in the country.
Recently, Lisa Cole, Republican candidate for Assembly District 4, was caught saying that being elected would be “an amazing opportunity to fix problems” for her wealthy corporate clients and “roll back some of the red tape” for them. Cole said she was pushed to run and endorsed by Joe Lombardo who haslater vetoed affordable housing protections for vulnerable Nevadans and whose gubernatorial campaign was bankrolled by a slumlord billionaire.
Republicans voted against numerous bills that would have uplifted Nevada families and lowered the cost of housing across the state:
- AB298 would have capped rent increases for seniors and Nevadans with disabilities.
- SB335 would have extended a 2021 law that would have allowed Nevadans to stay in their homes for longer if they had a pending rental assistance application.
- AB340 would have brought Nevada in line with the rest of the nation by requiring landlords, rather than tenants, to be the first to file in court in summary eviction proceedings.
- SB78, which would have protected renters from hidden and predatory fees from landlords.
