As Vice President Harris heads to the Silver State today to discuss Democrats’ work to protect reproductive rights, the contrast with MAGA Republicans’ anti-choice agenda is crystal clear: While the Biden-Harris administration and Nevada Democrats are committed to safeguarding reproductive freedoms, Republicans are doing everything they can to achieve their goal of banning abortion nationwide.
MAGA Republicans in Congress have spent years introducing legislation to ban abortion nationwide, and support for a national abortion ban has now become the litmus test for the 2024 Republican field. These candidates’ records make it clear they won’t stop pushing their dangerous, anti-choice agenda until abortion is banned.
Donald Trump: “Nobody has ever done more for right to life than Donald Trump. I put three Supreme Court justices who all voted, and they got something that they’ve been fighting for for 64 years.”
Associated Press: “Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed a bill to ban abortions after six weeks of pregnancy…DeSantis signed the measure late Thursday night in a private ceremony without fanfare, hours after the Republican-dominated statehouse approved the bill.”
Washington Post: “South Carolina Republican Sen. Tim Scott signaled Friday that he would sign a six-week federal ban on abortion if passed by Congress while he was president, staking a more extreme position than he had previously taken…’If I were president of the United States, I would literally sign the most conservative pro-life legislation that they can get through Congress,’ Scott added, regarding a federal ban.”
Newsweek: “Haley described herself as ‘very pro-life’ and has spent most of her political career fighting for anti-abortion legislation, including signing a law as South Carolina governor in 2016 banning the procedure in most circumstances after 19 weeks of pregnancy unless the mother’s life is at risk.”
DC News Now: “Gov. Glenn Youngkin said he was ‘frustrated’ with state Democrats after a swift rejection Thursday of his proposed 15-week ban on abortion.”
Associated Press: “[Gov. Kristi Noem] and South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley released a letter to South Dakota pharmacists saying they are ‘subject to felony prosecution’ if they procure or dispense abortion-inducing drugs. The state bans all abortions except to save the life of the pregnant person.”
As their anti-choice agenda remains unpopular with the American people, the majority of Republican politicians – from DC to Nevada to the field of 2024 presidential hopefuls across the country – have stayed silent on their party’s latest attack on abortion care: A Trump-appointed federal judge moving to block access to medication abortion.
Las Vegas Review-Journal: “Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo’s office said in an email officials will monitor the federal rulings as they advance through the judicial process, but did not have further comment.”
Wall Street Journal: “Representatives for former President Donald Trump, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a presumed presidential aspirant who is considering a state bill that would ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, didn’t respond to requests for comment on Friday’s ruling.”
Semafor: “Donald Trump still hasn’t talked about it. Nikki Haley stumped in northwest Iowa, but never mentioned it. Vivek Ramaswamy recorded interview after interview, and it never came up…One week after Democrats flipped the Wisconsin supreme court with an abortion-focused campaign, and days before Kacsmaryk’s order goes into effect, most Republicans are reluctant to discuss the issue and the stakes.”
But MAGA Republicans’ silence can’t cover up their records or their clear agenda of banning abortion across the country.
