Trump Said He “Couldn’t Care Less” If Nevadans’ Costs Go Up

In an interview with NBC News, Donald Trump said he “couldn’t care less” if automakers raised prices after he announced he would impose 25% tariffs on all foreign-made automobiles. He continued “I couldn’t care less if they raise prices […] I hope they raise their prices.” This comes after recent reporting from the New York Times found that Trump’s tariffs could impact nearly 50,000 jobs in Nevada, including 66% of all jobs in Storey County. At a time when federal employees in Nevada are being indiscriminately laid off and unemployment and food insecurity continue to rise under Lombardo, Trump’s reckless and erratic tariffs will have devastating impacts on Nevada’s economy by driving prices up and killing jobs.

Earlier this month, when asked by KSNV about prices going up in response to Trump’s cost-raising trade war with Canada, Joe Lombardo told reporters he “is not commenting on this topic” and Rep. Mark Amodei refused to respond altogether. Additionally, an independent study estimates that Trump’s 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, Nevada’s largest trade partners, will result in an average effective pay cut of nearly $1,000 for U.S. households.

Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Tai Sims:

“Donald Trump not caring whether or not costs are driven up for working families isn’t shocking considering last year he told Nevadans, ‘I don’t care about you, I just want your vote.’ What is even more concerning is Joe Lombardo and Republicans’ refusal to stand up to Trump and demand that these harsh and devastating tariffs be paused, or at least more strategically implemented to ensure working families are not harmed in the process.”
